Created for schools by teachers and industry
What is DesignIT! Glass?
DesignIT! Glass is an industry-based project and competition for schools, mapped to the national curriculum and Diplomas. It familiarises students with the glass industry through researching and designing products, and investigating different aspects of the industry – from the manufacture of different types of glass to their many uses.
The Project
The project asks school students to:
- Research and design a number of different glass products.
- Identify the type of raw materials used.
- Investigate manufacturing processes and the different considerations and constraints of each product.
- Investigate the sustainability of glass and show an understanding of environmental issues.
Support Material
Free, high-quality learning materials are provided, as well as existing materials from industry, such as from the Glass and Glazing Federation, British Glass and other employer-developed materials.
Curriculum Links
The project is relevant to: Year 9 Design Technology (pre-GCSE); Product Design at GCSE; Product Design A Level and is also relevant to the Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment and Manufacturing and Product Design.
